20 East African firms have also taken up various special category awards at the 2011 CIO 100 Annual Awards. Vision Group took home the Uganda special category while Sumaria Group took home the Tanzania special category award.

MobiKash Afrika Limited topped the Financial sector while Nuru East Africa Limited scooped the Energy sector award. Kenya Airways flew home the Transport category award while the Directorate of e-Government scooped the Public Sector award for the special role it has played in spearheading use of ICT for service delivery in government agencies and ministries.

The Real Estate award went to Propertyzote.com while the United States International University won the Education award.

 Uganda's Vision Group emerged again to take home the Media category award while mPedigree Network took the Health category. KEPHIS (Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate) topped the Agriculture category while World Vision Kenya topped the Non Governmental Organisations Sector.

Interconsumer Products Limited (Nice & Lovely) topped the Retail sector while Sarova Hotels Limited (e-commerce) took the Hospitality category.

Tanzania's CFAO Motors Limited was top in the Automotive category.

An Infrastructure award sponsored by Huawei went to the 2010 CIO 100 winner, Safaricom. IBM sponsored a GreenEdge award that recognises environmental friendly "green" projects, an award that went to Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment Centre. Cyberoam who supply Unified Threat Management solutions sponsored a Security category that went to Sarova Hotels Limited. The Technology Partner awards sponsored by Next Technologies went to Cisco Systems.
