UPU unveils strategies to save moribund Postal Corporation of Kenya Peter Nalika

The coming of the internet service in Kenya sounded a death knell to the lacklustre Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) because it meant more people would learn how to use and send electronic mails rather than the physical paper and envelope business. This dislodged PCK from its comfort zone of a monopoly, with its only leverage now being the parcel delivery services, albeit with stiff competition from private entrants into the parcel business.
Now, in a bid to save the state corporation from imminent collapse, the Universal Postal Union (UPU), in collaboration with other sector have come up with strategies that   embrace the advancements in the technology space inorder to stay in order to keep afloat in the face of digital competition.

UPU Director General, Edouard Dayan describes it as an agency with a global vision of developing tools in the technical corporation that will serve everyone. For instance, they have had tools that have helped SMEs to trade and also enable the migrants deliver parcels to their people. UPU manages the electronic network that connects 150 countries and apparently they are working on software utilities that will enable sharing call centres. With over 500 delegates attending this two-day forum at the United Nations, it will be an opportunity to change the Postal Corporation into the moving modern age of communication. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr. Bitange Ndemo said that PCK will position itself and stay in the market with the UPU strategies that has worked on postal software towards the journey of automating their systems.

The conference will be geared towards revising the UPU strategies and cross check the achievement released since then, technology at hand and new electronic development towards the enhancement of communication, and the global issues in relation to postage and the UN strategy. Communications being a fundamental human right, there is a need to improve the quality of the 3 – dimension service of the market and adapt the postal services to a technology platform.
