UAP Insurance has made the first payment to its SalamaSure claimant..
Confirming the payout to Raphael Macharia who was involved in a road accident and later hospitalized, UAP Insurance Managing Director James Wambugu said the successful settlement of the first UAP SalamaSure claim has shown how technology can be used to demystify insurance and to make insurance services accessible to many Kenyans.
"We are grateful that our first claim has been paid successfully and that SalamaSure has gone full circle and that our new product is now changing lives as testified by our first SalamaSure claimant. The use of the mobile phone platform to sell insurance is revolutionary and we hope this will definitely change the insurance landscape in Kenya and across the world," said Wambugu.
Thanking UAP officials who paid him a courtesy call at his house in Nairobi Kayole estate, Macharia said his experience with the SalamaSure has changed his perception about insurance.

"I've always seen insurers as gamblers who are out to con you of your hard earned cash but my experience with UAP SalamaSure has changed this. I registered with SalamaSure not because I wanted to get insured, but just out of because curiosity. I was shocked when I received a call from UAP advising me that they would pay part of my medical bill when I got involved in an accident just three days after I took the policy. I'm very happy with the whole process which took me only two minutes to effect."

Macharia continued: "I had an accident when I didn't have money. Interestingly, the money came in while a church group was praying for me and based on my experience seven other people bought the product," said Macharia.

Wambugu emphasized that UAP was in the forefront of demystifying insurance by making it simple, relevant and accessible and affordable to majority of Kenyans.

"We make people's lives better by enhancing their quality of life and delivering peace of mind and financial freedom," he said.

UAP SalamaSure, launched in September, is a dynamic mobile based personal accident cover that targets the largely uninsured population segment.

This is the first product of its kind in the region, which is expected to significantly contribute to the insurance industry's efforts to grow insurance penetration which currently stands at only 3% of GDP in Kenya and less than 1% in Uganda and Tanzania.
