Telkom Kenya revives countrywide CDMA services Zachary Ochieng
Coming hot on the heels of a recent KSh 1 (US$ 0.013) per MB offer on its Internet prices, Orange, the commercial brand of Telkom Kenya, has revived the countrywide Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) roaming service. Formerly known as Telkom Wireless, but now branded Orange Fixed Plus, the CDMA service enables subscribers to enjoy the full benefit of using their fixed phone line on the go within their region and even beyond, through an attractive roaming tariff.
Telkom Kenya’s Head of Corporate Communications Angela Mumo praised the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) for authorising the firm to reintroduce the service on a national scale.
“Technically, CCK requires telecommunication service providers operating CDMA platforms to operate within regional zones thus the need to introduce a regional roaming service”, said Ms Mumo.
While the reintroduction of the CDMA service will spur the firm’s positioning, it is also set to spur competition, as other operators will no doubt come up with new solutions in their scramble for the market share.
Meanwhile, Orange today handed over prizes to subscribers who participated in the recently concluded Orange Fixed Plus Nyakua Bonge la Ushindi promotion. Three customers won brand new Toyota cars while eleven others won three wheelers, popularly known as Tuk Tuks. Six other customers won an all expenses paid round trip to the UK to watch a Chelsea Premier League game at the Stamford Bridge.
