The Samsung Kenya and Mobile Monday Teams
Samsung has announced that it will fund five locally developed mobile applications to the tune of Kenya shillings 200,000 each. The announcement was made by Samsung Kenya's Deputy General Manager during this month's Mobile Monday Kenya event which took place at the iHub. The apps would be built on the Samsung Bada platform and is an initiative that seeks to promote development of locally relevant mobile applications. Developers have the next six weeks to develop and pitch their applications after which the top six applications would be selected for the funding. At the moment, the Samsung platform has a couple of locally developed applications. This include Mpango, a geo-location application that informs users of events taking place near them , including movies, allowing them to preview the movies.
Samsung also announced that it would introduce six new handsets on the Bada platform by the 1st quarter of 2011. This was in response to questions raised over the affordability of the only Bada phone available in the market, the Samsung Wave which is retailing at above kshs. 30,000. Of the phones to be introduces, one will be an entry level handset expected to retail at Kshs. 10,000.
