PS roots for local digital content at Tandaa Symposium Dennis Mbuvi
Information and Communications Permamnent Secretary Dr Bitange Ndemo this morning officially launched the second Tandaa Symposium on film and animation. In his speech, Dr Ndemo said that the aim of the Government is to facilitate the creation of wealth rather than provide employment. Citizens should therefore aim at wealth creation by exploiting their talent.
“Despite the launching of Digital TV in Kenya, it remains unexploited with most people not even aware of it. The goverment has passed laws that mandate local TV stations to air 40 percent local content. However, content from Nigeria is now being passed as local content , which it is not”, said Dr Ndemo.
The PS also said that broadband in Kenya has not been exploited. To exploit digital media, Kenyans have to produce local digital content. To help achieve this, the government is funding post production studios at the Sameer Industrial Park. He noted that during the last Tandaa Sympoisum on film and animation, he had met over 700 animators, all who had no access to a post-production studio.
Dr Ndemo also announced that the government, in the next two weeks, will launch an experiment where local news will be translated live and simultaneously in several vernacular languages over Digital TV.
Dr Ndemo noted that that there was increased demand for local Kenyan content African wide, such as Vioja Mahakamani , the popular comedy series on the national broadcaster, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), with the programme enjoying re-runs in Tanzania.
“Kenyans should therefore learn to be self-dependent rather than relying on help from foreign donors”, Dr Ndemo urged.
