Nokia East Africa held recently held its first Ovi Happy Hour for the year.  The event was held at the Sierra lounge at Yaya Centre and was attended by various bloggers. Also in attendance was Nokia East Africa GM Kenneth Oyolla and Nokia Regional Communication Manager for East and Southern Africa, Dorothy Ooko. Among the applications displayed was Snaptu, a free application that enables access to Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Picassa, entertainment news, blogs, sports and local guides. Each of the attendees was given an opportunity to pitch a favourite Nokia application for a chance to win a Nokia C7 handset. Ovi Maps, a free application developed by Nokia, has features such as directions when travelling. Ovi maps has the ability to accurately determine a user’s location via assisted GPS. The only paid app demonstrated in the day was 365 board games. The application has 7 games that the user can customize and has 365 levels. Shazam targets music lovers. Available for free, the application detects songs that are playing and then fetches the details of the song from an online database, including title and artists. CIO East Africa (App) is an application developed in house using the Nokia Ovi wizard. The application pulls news and images from the CIO East Africa Website and displays them in a light mobile phone friendly format. For Nokia touch phone users looking for a historical touch on their phones, the rotary dialer replaces the normal touch pad with the old circular dialer characteristic of the analog landline handsets.
