Nokia launches the Nokia Browser Dennis Mbuvi
Nokia on Thursday evening launched the Nokia Browser in Nairobi. The launch was held at Sierra Lounge at Yaya Centre to a group of bloggers during Nokia's monthly Happy Hour meetup. Speaking during the launch, Agatha Gikunda, Head of Solution Sales and Developer Relations at Nokia East and Southern Africa, said that the browser was created for Nokia Series 40 feature phones.
The Nokia Browser compresses data by up to 90% through the use of a proxy server. The proxy server strips heavy content from a users requested web page and re-formats the page content before delivering it to the device. Gikunda said that the browser would save money and time for its users while serving them with a pleasant mobile experience.
Other key features of the browser are customised links on the browsers home page. The links will feature top content from each country in various categories. This is meant to act as a guide to new Internet users trying to find their way through the net.
The browser also features Nokia Browser Web apps , which are customised web sites and applications in a manner that is more suited for mobile devices. Nokia has released an Application Programming Interface to help developers in developing Nokia Browser Web Apps.
Nokia Browser will ship with all new Nokia Series 40 feature phones, replacing Opera Mini which Nokia previously shipped with the phone. Nokia C2-02, Nokia C2-03 and Nokia C2-06 will be the first phones to ship with the browser. Existing phones can get the browser through a software update or by downloading the Browser from Nokia's Ovi Store.
Nokia also demostrated a prototype of the upcoming Nokia 700 smartphone and Nokia's feature smartphone OS, Symbian Belle.
