Nokia has revealed the winner of the global competition which challenged people to get creative and compose their own versions of the classic Nokia Tune. 'Nokia Tune Dubstep Edition' by Valerio Alessandro Sizzi from Italy was selected as the winner of the competition which received more than 6,200 entries from over 2,800 sound designers across over 70 countries. The winning entry can be heard on Nokia's Brand Book.
Creating the next variation of the Nokia Tune was immensely popular globally with more than 1.4 million visitors to the competition website. The entries were played over 11 million times and around hundred thousand visitors shared the tunes via social media forums such as Facebook and Twitter.
Nokia, together with AudioDraft, world experts in crowdsourcing audio creation, launched the competition on September 5, to encourage people to experiment with both old and new Nokia Tunes and create their own musical parts, sounds and arrangements. Tunes entered could be up to a maximum of 30 seconds in length.

The winning entry was carefully selected by an expert jury, which comprised of some of the most respected names in the audio branding industry including Kai Bronner, one of the founders of Audio Branding Academy; Julian Treasure, known for his TED talks and author of 'Sound Business'; and Mark Dewings, head of Brand & Marketing Communications at SoundCloud. Nokia's own SVP of Design, Marko Ahtisaari, was also on the seven member jury.

"All of us in the jury were very impressed by the number, variety and in many cases the outstanding quality of the Nokia Tune competition entries. It was inspiring to see how creative the participants were in adapting the world's most-played tune in fresh and unexpected ways. Picking a winner out of the final ten was extremely difficult because of the sheer range of genres, styles and treatments," says Julian Treasure, one of the Nokia Tune competition judges and the chairman of The Sound Agency. "What made the 'Nokia Tune Dubstep Edition' stand out were its energy and unbridled exuberance. We were looking for a fresh, engaging, original yet distinctive Nokia Tune version, and the winner delivers all of that in a very interesting way."

The prizes

The winning tune will sit alongside the default Nokia Tune and will be included in select models within the company's 2012 product portfolio, an estimated 100 million devices. In addition, the winning tune will be made available on Nokia Store and featured on Nokia's Brand Book. The winner will also be awarded a prize of 10,000 USD.

"I have always been very passionate about music. I studied sound design in Milan, and currently work as a producer for an independent digitally distributed record label in Italy," says the Nokia Tune competition winner Valerio Alessandro Sizzi. "In addition, I am also a DJ and spin records every Thursday night at a party in Milan – it's fun! I made a Dubstep version of the Nokia Tune mainly because dubstep has become massively popular during the last couple of years among the 'hipsters' from all over the world, and because producing a dubstep track is quite challenging. I thought that a sparkling, modern and cool version of the Nokia Tune would be perfect. If you want to offer people the most modern products, you should make your sound as modern as possible."

The five runner-ups will have their versions of the Nokia Tune available in Nokia Store and will be awarded 1,000 USD each.
