Shaka mobile, the first prepaid mobile service company offering tailored voice plans and mobile money transfer to Diaspora Africans in the United States has praised Kenya for embracing mobile money transfer services. According to their report, approximately 1.5 million Kenyans who live in the Diaspora, remit US$750 million to Kenya through Western Union and other international money transfer companies, something which will soon change after they venture into the market. The company has entered into collaborations with Kenyan banks like Equity, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and Family Bank to help in developing financial solutions.
Kenyans living in the US will soon start sending money back home through Shaka mobile, which will be competing especially on the international market transfer and also help in voice operating services. With most ordinary citizens now opting to transact money through mobile industry especially with internationally recognized M-pesa money transfer services, it is being seen that most African countries are adapting large scale mobile use where banking services are low, something that is creating stiffer competitions as days go by.
Shaka mobile is soon venturing into other regions like Egypt, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Ghana and they are hoping after getting the US market under their arms, the next stop will be the United Kingdom. It is estimated that approximately 4 million Africans have adapted mobile technology in their day to day business.
