Ghanaian Web sites hacked after World Cup match Dennis Mbuvi
It’s World Cup season, and as most Kenyans cheer the rest of the world , they may be sad that the national team failed to qualify for the fete. However, system administrators may have a reason to be happy that the national side did not qualify. It gives them peace of mind. After Ghana became the first African team to win a match at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, several Ghanaian Web sites came under attack from a hacker known as "Stronix". According to a Kenyan security blog, http://d3vnulls.blogspot.com/ the hacker posted a photo of the defacement of a Web site belonging to Ghana's Trust Bank , which featured the message "(F-word) you Ghana".
At the same time, several other Ghanaian Web sites were not available online with maintenance messages. A Google search indicated a Ghanaian news Web site may have also been hacked by Stronix.
Further research indicates that a Serbian hacker known as Stronix has been responsible for hacking of various Web sites, mostly targeting Albanian owned sites with messages related to the conflicts in Kosovo. Stronix, together with another hacker known as Torex have hacked the Albanian president's Web sites and the Albanian police Web site, amongst others in the past.
More information from a local security forum indicates that the Ghana ICT sector is plagued by the same problems highlighted in the hacking and defacement of Essar Telecom (YU) limited. This include shallow security audits done by hired personnel who are no abreast with current trends in the security industry. It is also said that there are few organisations dealing with security assessments in Ghana and that most organisations do not take ICT security matters seriously, limiting protection to physical measures like firewalls.
