Area control center to be launched in Rwanda Ruth Kang’ong’oi

In a bid to cub the growing air traffic, Rwanda is set to launch an Area Control Center at Kanombe International Airport. The Area Control Centre was installed along with anew modern radar system to boost air traffic control operations.

Rwanda a landlocked country is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with population of 10 million people. Air transport is indispensable to the socio-economic and political development of the country.

Kigali International Airport, the gateway to the outside world is one of the 17 airports identified by The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) as a future hub network in Africa. The airport has regional, national and International Strategic Significance.

The authorities in Rwanda recognizes the crucial importance of Kigali International (KIA) and are making efforts to improve its airport infrastructure and air navigation facilities with a view to maintain International Civil Aeronautics Organization(ICAO) standards.

Where there is air traffic movement’s growth, The ACC system which has been successfully tested is a modern Control approach hence improving security and safety. According to officials from the Aviation Authority, about 40 people will be trained in the area control services before its official launch.

They will be ground-based controllers who direct aircraft on the ground and in the air separating aircrafts to prevent collisions, to organize and expedite the flow of traffic, and to provide information and other support for pilots when able. Ten of them are being trained in Nairobi, and another five in South Africa already. Others will be trained within to cut costs spent in training them outside the country. The standard price in the regional centers is US$40,000 per person while Europe it goes for Euro50, 000.
