Safaricom to launch Facebook phone, more smartphones Dennis Mbuvi

Safaricom will soon be launching a dedicated entry level Facebook phone. The phone , Vodafone 555 (VF 555) Blue is a handset manufactured specifically for Vodafone, who are one of Safaricom's shareholders. The VF 555 is a Mediatek based phone, bearing a similar chip and operating system found on many Chinese, Taiwanesse and Brazilian handsets. Notably, the phone has a 2.4 inch screen, a full qwerty keybaord with a dedicated Facebook key.
The VF 555 also has Facebook and Social networking service integration into the operating system. This includes a chat client that supports Facebook and Google chat, an Email Client and the Opera Web browser. The phone supports EDGE Internet connectivity, FM radio, 40 megabytes inbuilt memory (enough to store about 10 MP3 songs) and support for an external memory card. The VF 555 also bundles a 2 Megapixel camera with flash. Entertainment savvy users can look forward to the phones support for standard avi video and a standard earphone jack.
Though no pricing has been given so far, CIO East Africa does not expect the phone to retail above KSh 5,000.
Safaricom will also be refreshing its aged HTC line of phones, given that its still stocking handsets running Android 1.6. New devices will include the HTC Sensation, HTC Wildfire S, HTC Chacha and the HTC Flier Tablet, all running Android. The HTC Sensation has a large 4.3 inch screen, an 8 megapixel camera and 1 Gigabyte internal storage. The HTC Chacha has a "one-touch" Facebook dedicated key and a Qwerty keyboard.
Also coming in is the HTC Flier Tablet , one of the few tablets featuring a stylus.
Safaricom will also be stocking the 32 Gb iPad 2 and the Blackberry 9900 Bold.
The mobile operator is putting more effort on pushing a data depedent inventory as it moves to reap more revenue off data as revenue from voice and sms slow down. Passed research has indicated that Kenya has more than 2 million people on Facebook, a target Safaricom could be going for.
