Mobile subscribers in Kenya exceed 25 million CIO Staff Writer
More than 25 million people in Kenya are connected to mobile telecommunications services.
According to the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) 4th Quarter Sector Statistical Report, Kenya had a total of 25.27 million subscribers by June 30 this year, representing 64.2% of the total population.
Pre-paid subscriptions represented 99% of the total mobile subscriptions, with Safaricom and Telkom Kenya registering positive gains in new subscriptions as Airtel and YU recorded a decline.
Meanwhile, there were 17.3 million registered mobile money transfer subscribers in the country at the end of June 2011, with KSh 48billion as the total amount of deposits made through the service.
A total of KSh 104 billion was realized as revenue from mobile services in 2010, representing a 15.7 % increase over the previous year. In 2010, the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) per month went down to KSh 348.94 from KSh 389 in 2009 mainly as a result of lower calling tariffs.
The total investment in mobile sub-sector in 2010 reduced by 32.6% to stand at KSh27 billion from KSh 40 billion reported in 2009. At the end of June 2011, more than 5,800 staff were employed in the mobile telecoms sector of which 35% were women.
The performance of the fixed telecoms sub-sector was not as rosy.
By June 30, the fixed line (i.e. fixed terrestrial lines and fixed wireless) had 374,942 subscribers, representing an 18.5% decline over the same period the previous year. The decline is attributed to the trend of fixed-to-mobile substitution as well as high maintenance costs of the fixed line as a result of cable vandalism.
At the end of June 2011, Kenya had a total of 4.2 million Internet subscriptions, representing an increase of 37.5% compared to the same period in the previous year. The mobile data/internet subscriptions through GPRS/EDGE and 3G remained the most popular medium of access accounting for 98% of the total internet subscriptions.
In the same period, the country had 12.5 million Internet users, representing a 60.1% increase over the same period the previous year. The number of broadband subscription grew by 550.3% from June 2010 to stand at 121,126 by the end of June 2011. At the end of the 4th Quarter, the data/internet market had a total of 7482 employees.
