MacAfee speak on malware threats in Kenya Peter Nalika
Christopher Brennan, MacAfee Vice President Africa, Middle East & Eastern Europe speaks during the function
The year 2009/2010 marked key milestones in national connectivity of Kenya, i.e the erection of undersea cables and national terrestrial infrastructure. This kind of connections opened Kenya to a whole new world of networks and information sharing. With this, Kenya is becoming a playground for cyber criminals who actually follow where unsecure data lies.
According to , technology explosion we are experiencing as a country, cost cutting practises towards security, and our increased opened borders are the major threat factors organisations are facing in the expense of their security. Therefore corporates should have one point of security.
Though security is not only about antivirusess, there is more to it than we think, for instance, in 2005 MacAfee discovered attackers were manupilating Google. The company used predefined security measures to monitor cyber crime activities before they escalate and cause damages to companies.
Global Threat Intelligence (GTI) is one of the products used by MacAfee to monitor such activities. China was once a victim of cyber crime and MacAfee saved the day by discovering these hackers who had attacked BP oil and the company was going to lose millions of dollars.
“As Kenya enters the consumerization niche, where there is an explosion of devices, there will be an increase in malware attacks”, says Brennan. Therefore there is need for continual regulatory compliance in terms of security matters. This especially is important as the company labs have discovered 14 million unique pieces of malware.
As the eGovernment of Kenya takes transformation reforms, shared services and a shift to the national data paradigm, they need to go beyond and have a practical security strategy. The directorate therefore is in the process of formulating an ICT Security policy to mitigate and address security factors.
Brennan sees the year 2010 as a record year of web – based threats. He challenges the organizations as to how many of them think of changing the photocopier hard drives after a period of use. It is to this safety assumptions we have that malware take control over our systems without us noticing.
MacAfee Territory Channel Manager, Fabio Joaquim sensitizes Kenyan organizations to optimize their security systems. By doing so, they will become pro-active and spend less on security for their systems. As data moves arround it needs to be secure, and the company is the only one that specializes on security.
