Kenyatta uses Twitter to solicit input into 2012 budget Harry Hare
Kenya's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Uhuru Kenyatta has invited input into the 2012-2013 National Budget through his twitter account. The tweet read "Hey guys. I'd like to invite you to share your ideas on the 2012 - 2013 Budget following the success we had last year".
This is the second time that Treasury is soliciting public input into the budget online but the first time the announcement has come through twitter. Kenyatta is an active Twitter user and has over 30, 000 followers and more than 1000 tweets.
Last year Treasury reported to have received many submissions from people through the online form. "We were so amazed at the level of success we experienced in that pilot social media program that we decided to implement it again with the hope that even more of you would share your ideas with us", said a statement from the DPM's office.
The budgeting process has been a reserve of technical committees with very little input from the general public. This process has opened up the process to a much wider audience and therefore making the process transparent and inclusive.
"As we formulate the National Budget for the financial year 2012-2013 and establish the fiscal priorities of this country, we hope that by opening up this platform earlier, we are providing you with a more inclusive process that will allow us to factor in your priorities to a greater extent than before", the statement continued.
The Treasury has been very adaptive in the application of technology despite being one of the organisations whose websites were recently hacked by an Indonesian hacker in a swoop of 103 government websites. The Integrated Finance Information Management System (IFMIS) department in Treasury is one of the Honorees of the East African edition of the CIO100 Awards.
