Wikimedia, the not for profit organisation that manages Wikipedia , the free encyclopedia and other related projects, has officially recognised the Wikimedia Kenya as an official chapter. Wikimedia Kenya also becomes the second Wikimedia Chapter in Africa, and in recognition of its status, threw a party on Saturday at the Public Service Club for its members and section of the press.
Wikimedia chapters are tasked with promoting Wikipedia projects, such as awareness on resources and encouraging addition of more resources from within a certain region, mostly a country or a city.
The Kenyan Chapter has about 15 members, including several university students. The chapter's main roles have been creating Wikipedia content in Kiswahili, mostly through translation of existing content. Wikipedia for schools is a pilot project that seeks to take Wikipedia to schools in the region by installing offline copies of the encyclopedia.
At the moment, the chapter is also on a project to take photos of scenes, buildings and streets within Nairobi to contribute them to the Wikimedia Commons repository, which hosts multimedia resources and makes them available for non-commercial reuse.
