Last mile challenges hold back Uganda data market Edris Kisambira

September 10, 2010 0 Comments

Last month I talked at length about the state of Uganda’s mobile segment of the telecommunications sector where competition is taking us ever closer to free calls – a development that so far is unique to Uganda on the African continent if I am not mistaken. One of the key factors that has driven us to this users’ dreamland has been the bare-knuckles competition that the sector has experienced over the last three years since the telecom sector was opened up to new competition in 2006. I asked last month whether the telcos had concentrated too much on the voice segment of the market and left the data segment on the way-side.I went ahead to say yes to that question reasoning that even with undersea fibre optic cables having  landed on the East African seaboard with terrestrial links to Uganda in place, Internet access is still priced highly (both initial costs and the monthly charges) and is sometimes unreliable. I will revisit the unreliable factor later.
